Modifications
for Any Classroom
~Work out a contract where student can determine the rewards for completion of homework. ~Give shorter but more frequent assignments. Allow student to complete homework in sections. ~Allow the use of a word processor for completion of work (in and out of class). ~Allow the use of a tape recorder to take notes. ~Correct assignments as soon as possible and hand them back for immediate gratification. ~Reward student for handing in neat, completed, and timely assignments. ~Help student become organized by keeping very little in his/her desk, using a bound book rather than looseleaf pages for writing. ~Be very specific in directions, have clear expectations. Have student repeat the directions to make sure s/he has heard them correctly. ~Use praise as much as possible. ~Make an example of the things student is good at, focusing on what student knows to encourage him/her to learn more. ~Give one direction at a time, making it as simple as possible. ~Determine if location of seating in class is appropriate. Physical proximity may affect ability to focus. ~Allow active participation on student's part. Don't squelch student from talking out of turn- encourage responses. ~Use a variety of visual and auditory techniques- ex: overhead projector, tape recorder, computer, etc. to make lessons more exciting. ~Provide work areas that may have less distraction, so the student can "retreat" as needed. ~Decrease written work and increase response options (orally, taped, etc.). ~Hold "mini-conferences" often with student to allow for questions, to determine where student is confused, to gain rapport, and to avoid isolation. ~Make up a work contract with specific times and assignments so that the student has a structured idea of responsibilities. ~Avoid numerous directions or assignments. Allow student to finish one assignment or directions at a time before going on to the next. ~Provide a peer tutor for student at the end of the day to review work and provide assistance. compiled by Mary Anne Fleury, M.A., 1997.
